A vertical cave and a fisherman's cable car over the sea

This day tour from Yogyakarta visits two singular attractions in the Gunungkidul karst region: Jomblang Cave, a vertical collapse doline with a 50-meter opening at its mouth, and Timang Beach, where a wooden gondola built by fishermen in 1997 crosses to a boulder island in the ocean. The tour runs 8 to 10 hours with a private vehicle, English-speaking guide, lunch and bottled water included; pickup is arranged from your hotel. Entrance tickets to the sites are separate.

Explore Jomblang Cave and Timang Beach

  • Visit Jomblang Cave sinkhole
  • Experience Timang Beach gondola ride

The Experience

If you have a full day free in Yogyakarta and want to see something beyond the usual temple circuit, this tour takes you south to the coast and into two places most visitors never reach. The morning starts with Jomblang Cave, a sinkhole cave formed thousands of years ago when soil and vegetation collapsed into the earth, leaving a well-like opening about 50 meters across at ground level. You descend into that opening and move through the cave system itself — the geological process that shaped it is visible in the walls and the scale of the space.

The second half of the day moves to Timang Beach, where the real draw is the gondola: a wooden cable car made from acacia wood and rope, built in 1997 by fishermen who needed a way to reach Timang Island — a large boulder in the middle of the ocean — to harvest lobster. The waves and currents made boats impossible, so they rigged this single-person gondola on stationary ropes. It still works the same way. You ride it out across open water to the island, then back. The gondola is the only way to reach the island; there's no alternative route.

Transport is private throughout the day, which means no waiting for other groups and no fixed schedule beyond your own pace at each site. Your guide speaks English and travels with you. Lunch and water are included; the vehicle is air-conditioned for the drive between sites.

What’s included

  • Private air-conditioned vehicle for the full day.
  • English-speaking guide.
  • lunch at a local restaurant.
  • bottled water throughout the tour.
  • fuel surcharge and parking fees at both sites.

Top questions

What exactly is Jomblang Cave and what do I do there?

Jomblang Cave is a vertical collapse doline — a cave formed when the earth and vegetation above it subsided thousands of years ago, leaving a sinkhole about 50 meters wide at the mouth. You descend into that opening and explore the cave system inside. The geological formations that created it are part of the Gunungkidul karst region, which extends across hundreds of cave complexes along the south coast.

How does the gondola at Timang Beach work?

The gondola is a wooden cable car made of acacia wood and rope, built in 1997 by fishermen to reach Timang Island — a large boulder in the ocean — to harvest lobster. It carries one person at a time across open water on stationary ropes. The rope was chosen because it resists sea water better than iron or steel. You ride it out to the island and back as part of the tour.

How long is this tour and what's included?

The tour runs 8 to 10 hours from pickup to return. Included are private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking guide, lunch, bottled water, fuel surcharge and parking fees. Entrance tickets to Jomblang Cave and Timang Beach are not included and are paid separately at each site.

Is this tour physically demanding?

The tour involves descending into a cave and riding a single-person gondola over the ocean. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness to comfortably complete both activities.

Where does pickup happen and what time does the tour start?

Pickup is included from your hotel in Yogyakarta. Your guide will arrange the specific pickup time based on your location and the tour schedule.
