The experience

The day starts with a vertical descent into Jomblang Cave. You'll be lowered 60 meters down the side of a massive sinkhole using a professional caving system, dropping into a world of stalactites and stalagmites that took thousands of years to form. The guide explains the geology as you move through the cave, and at one point sunlight breaks through the darkness above and illuminates the cave floor: a phenomenon locals call the "heavenly light." The entrance fee is paid in cash on site. Lunch is provided at the cave before you head out.

After Jomblang, you'll ride in a jeep to Timang Beach, a journey that requires off-road driving since standard cars can't reach it. The beach sits at the base of stark white cliffs that drop straight into deep blue ocean. The main attraction is the gondola: a traditional wooden cable cart suspended over the churning water that carries you from the cliff to a rocky outcrop. If you want more intensity, you can also cross via a suspension bridge instead, though both options cost extra and are optional. The jeep ride, beach entrance and guide are included. The gondola and bridge crossings you add at checkout if you want them.

The whole tour runs 12 hours including travel time between sites. You'll be picked up and dropped off at your hotel in Yogyakarta, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, and have an English-speaking driver who acts as your tour manager. Bottled water is provided throughout. This tour requires excellent physical fitness: the vertical descent, cave walking and beach terrain are classified as extreme sports, and it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular issues, or pregnancy.
