The experience

Hotel pickup starts at 6 a.m. from anywhere in the Yogyakarta city area. You'll arrive at the cave by 8 a.m., welcomed with hot coffee or tea before the caving begins. The vertical descent into Jomblang Cave takes you almost 60 meters down, and you'll spend around four hours exploring inside. The cave's defining feature is the ray of light breaking through the roof opening above. The effect is strongest in the morning, which is why the early start matters. You'll have time to photograph it and move through the passages with your guide before heading back up.

The guide is English-speaking and trained in caving. All equipment is provided, including boots (available from size 25 onward). Wear slippers to the site so you can change easily. Bring extra clothes and socks because you will get wet. A camera that shoots in low light works best for capturing the interior. Waterproof casing is worth considering. After you finish caving around 1 p.m., a packed lunch with local flavors waits at the location, along with bottled water. The return drive to your hotel takes about 90 minutes and arrives around 3:30 p.m.

The tour is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with cardiovascular concerns. You need at least moderate physical fitness to manage the vertical descent and the uneven cave passages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If your hotel is outside the Yogyakarta city area (in places like Borobudur, Solo, Semarang or other surrounding regions), an additional charge applies, paid to the driver on the day of the tour.
