Two caves, two ways: rappel into a vertical shaft with an underground forest, then float through a horizontal river passage

This 10-hour activity from Yogyakarta takes you into two distinct cave systems with a professional caving guide. You descend 60 meters into Jomblang Cave, a vertical shaft with an ancient forest at its base and natural light rays filtering through, then walk 300 meters to find the "Light of Heaven." Afterward, you tube 300 meters down a river inside Pindul Cave, drifting past formations thousands of years old. Hotel pickup is included for Yogyakarta accommodations. Outside the city, additional fees apply. Lunch and all caving equipment are provided. Moderate fitness is required. The activity is not suitable for pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns.

The experience

Jomblang Cave is a vertical descent into a 50-meter-wide shaft with walls that drop 60 to 80 meters. The guide lowers you down into the opening, and as you reach the bottom, you enter an underground forest: trees grow thick here because sunlight penetrates through the shaft opening above. After 300 meters of walking through rock formations, you reach the "Light of Heaven," a chamber where natural rays stream down from the opening far above. The cave's vertical structure and the interplay of light and shadow are what make this site distinct from most cave experiences.

From Jomblang, you move to Pindul Cave, a horizontal passage with a river running through it. Here you float in a tube for 300 meters, drifting past stalactites and stalagmites that formed over thousands of years. The cave is home to clusters of bats, and the rock formations shimmer in the low light. This is a wet activity. Bring extra clothes and a change of shoes, as you will get wet. Boots are available if you need them (smallest size 25). Slippers are easier to swap out at the entrance. A camera that shoots in low light works best for capturing the interior.

The day runs 10 hours total and includes an English-speaking driver, a professional caving guide, packed lunch at the site, bottled water, and all equipment for both caves. Hotel pickup is free within Yogyakarta city. If you're staying outside the city, an additional charge per vehicle applies depending on the distance. You'll receive your confirmation and voucher by email after booking, and the operator will confirm your pickup time in advance. The maximum wait time at your hotel is 10 to 15 minutes, so arrive on time.
