The Experience

I never thought I’d start my day dangling above a 30-meter drop, but that’s how it goes in Yogyakarta. The morning was already sticky when our driver picked us up — he had this easy grin and played old dangdut songs on the radio. At Jomblang Cave, the guides handed us harnesses and helmets (mine felt a bit loose, but they double-checked everything). You hear about “the light from heaven” down there, but honestly, nothing prepares you for that first cold rush of air as you’re lowered into the dark. There’s this earthy smell — wet limestone, moss maybe? — and then suddenly you’re standing in a shaft of sunlight so bright it almost hurts your eyes. I just stood there for a minute, not saying much.

Our guide, Pak Agus, told us stories about how locals believe spirits still live in these caves. He laughed when I tried to repeat the Javanese name for the cave — definitely butchered it. After climbing out (muddy boots and all), we drove to Pindul for cave tubing. It’s calmer than Jomblang; you just float along on these big rubber tubes while water drips from the ceiling. The water was cool against my back and there were bats overhead — not scary, just part of the place. We bumped into another group singing pop songs (off-key but cheerful) as we drifted by.

Lunch was simple — rice, fried chicken, sweet tea — eaten outside while our shoes dried in the sun. I kept thinking about that shaft of light in Jomblang Cave; it’s hard to describe why it sticks with you. Maybe because for a few seconds everything else goes quiet except your own breath and the sound of water somewhere below.
