The Experience

The route from Semarang port takes three hours inland to reach Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple and one of the seven wonders. Once there, a guide walks you through the site and explains the story of Buddha Gautama told in the relief carvings on the temple walls. You'll encounter 504 life-sized Buddha statues, each carved from a single stone. The scale of the place — and the precision of the stonework — becomes clear only when you're standing inside it.

Mendut Temple, built around the 7th century during the reign of King Indra of the Sailendra dynasty, is older and more historically significant than Borobudur, though fewer visitors know it. The inscription that dates the temple mentions King Indra built a sacred building called Venuvana, meaning "bamboo forest." Unlike Borobudur, Mendut remains an active place of prayer; you'll see three large Buddha statues — Cahyawuni Bodhisattvas including Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani — and locals still come here to worship. The guide explains the temple's role in Buddhist practice and its place in the region's religious history.

Between the two temples, you get traditional local snacks (jajanan pasar, the street food sold in markets across Java). The return journey to the port takes three hours.
