The Experience
Day one takes you from Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo, a 3,676-meter volcano and the most visited crater in Indonesia. Your private driver handles the drive while you watch the landscape change; if you want to stop at Madakaripura Waterfall along the way, that's optional. You'll settle into your hotel near Bromo and have the evening free to rest before the early start.
On day two, you wake before dawn to board a 4x4 Jeep for the ascent. The sunrise reveals Mount Bromo's crater alongside the neighboring peaks of Mount Batok and Mount Semeru—a view most people travel to Java to see. After exploring the crater rim and caldera, you return for breakfast, then travel to Banyuwangi City, where you'll stay the second night before the Ijen trek.
Day three begins in the middle of the night. A local guide leads the 90- to 120-minute hike up Ijen Crater, where the blue fire—sulfuric flames that burn at the crater's mouth—rises from the ground. This phenomenon exists in only two places worldwide: here and at Dallol in Ethiopia. After witnessing it, you can return to your hotel or head directly to Ketapang Harbor to catch the ferry to Bali; the ferry ticket is included if you choose that route.

What is the blue fire at Ijen Crater and when do you see it?
The blue fire is burning sulfur that rises from Ijen Crater's volcanic vents. You hike to the crater in darkness and witness the flames during the ascent and at the crater mouth; the hike takes 90 to 120 minutes and you're there in the early morning hours before sunrise.
Do I need to be fit to do this tour?
The tour requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The Mount Bromo sunrise involves an early wake-up and Jeep travel to altitude; the Ijen Crater hike is a 90- to 120-minute trek uphill in darkness. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or if you're pregnant.
What's included in the 3-day price?
The tour includes private accommodation in a hotel near Mount Bromo and another near Ijen Crater (private rooms with single or double beds); a private English-speaking driver; a 4x4 Jeep for all transport and the Bromo sunrise exploration; all park entry fees and taxes; a flashlight and gas respirator mask; and a ferry ticket from Java to Bali if you continue to the islands.
Are meals included?
Breakfast is provided on days two and three. Lunch and dinner are not included, so you'll arrange those meals in the towns where you stay.
Can children go on this tour?
Children are welcome from age 5. They'll travel in the air-conditioned Jeep and can join the hikes if they're comfortable with the physical demands—the Ijen trek in particular is a nighttime hike on a steep path.
What happens if I want to go to Bali after the tour?
On day three, after the Ijen Crater hike, you can head directly to Ketapang Harbor instead of returning to your hotel. The ferry ticket from Java to Bali is included in the tour price.
