The experience

The alarm goes off at 3 a.m. on day two. You meet your driver and guide in the dark, climb into the jeep, and drive up to Pananjakan viewpoint at 2,770 meters. By the time you reach the overlook, the sky is still black, but the cold and the silence tell you something is about to happen. When the sun breaks the horizon, you see five mountains at once: Mount Bromo smoking in the center, Mount Batok beside it, Mount Semeru rising to 3,676 meters in the distance, and the vast caldera floor spreading below. The light changes every few minutes. Your guide points out the details (the active crater, the scale, the way the clouds move through the valleys), while you stand there with a camera or just watching.

After sunrise, you drive back down and walk across the Sea of Sand, the ash plain that fills the caldera floor. It takes time to cross on foot, and the ground shifts under you. You reach Mount Bromo's crater rim, stand at the edge, and look into the active volcano. By 8 a.m. you're back at the hotel for breakfast and a shower. Then it's a five-hour drive to Bondowoso, with a stop in Besuki for lunch. You stay overnight in a guest house there, resting before the final push.

Day three starts at 1:30 a.m. again. The drive to Pos Paltuding is short. The trek to Ijen Crater's summit takes about two hours and covers three kilometers. You arrive as the sun rises over the crater lake, which glows sulfur-yellow and releases plumes of blue fire: the hydrogen sulfide burning as it meets oxygen. The lake sits 200 meters below the rim. After you've seen it, the drive to Ketapang Harbour takes two hours, and you arrive by mid-morning. Your guide is with you the whole way, and all transport, accommodation, park fees and the jeep are included in the price.
