The Experience

The tour starts with pickup from Surabaya before noon and a five-hour drive to Bondowoso, where you stay overnight. The next morning you leave the hotel at midnight to reach Ijen's parking lot by 1:30 am, then trek uphill for 90 minutes to the crater rim. The blue flames—a rare sulfurous fire that burns only in darkness—appear as you arrive, visible only in the wee hours before dawn. You stand at the edge of a 200-meter crater filled with turquoise acidic water, watching miners in the darkness haul heavy sulfur loads up the steep slope. A gas mask and trekking pole are provided for the hike.

After descending and a coffee break at a local cafe, you drive to Papuma Beach for sunset, then overnight in Jember. Day three takes you to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, the widest on Java, where the water flows in a curtain formation down a steep cliff face. You explore the waterfall and can wade in the pool below, then drive four hours to the Bromo area hotel. On the final morning, you leave at 2 am for Mount Bromo stargazing and the Milky Way, then stay to watch sunrise cast light across the volcanic sand sea. A 4WD ride takes you across the caldera floor to Bromo's crater rim, where you see Mount Batok (2440m), active Mount Bromo (2329m), and Java's highest volcano, Gunung Semeru (3676m), all in one view.
