The experience
We were barely awake when our guide, Agus, showed up at the hotel in Surabaya: midnight sharp, like he promised. The city was still humming with mopeds, but it faded as we drove east. I remember dozing off and then suddenly we were bouncing along in a jeep, headlights cutting through mist. Agus handed me a cup of something sweet and hot (coffee or maybe ginger tea?), and grinned, “Sunrise soon.”
Standing on that viewpoint above Mount Bromo, it was colder than I’d packed for (bring gloves if you’re reading this!). People around us huddled in scarves, phones ready. The sky went from black to this weird pinkish blue so fast. When the sun finally cracked over the volcano, everyone just… stopped talking. Even Agus got quiet. I tried to take photos but honestly they don’t come close. My shoes filled with fine ash on the walk down to the Sea of Sand: didn’t expect that texture underfoot.
The crater itself felt alive: smoke curling out, sulfur in the air, wind whipping my hair everywhere. After all that adrenaline we sat at Lava View restaurant for breakfast.
