The experience
You start at 9:30 in Surabaya and drive three hours to Cemara Lawang village, a journey slowed by Java's traffic more than distance. On the way, you stop at Madakaripura waterfalls, a site sacred to the local Tengger people. A 15-minute motorbike ride takes you to the entrance, then a 30-minute walk leads into the falls. Bring clothes you don't mind soaking. The waterfall is only accessible when it hasn't rained heavily, so water flow stays safe to approach.
Cemara Lawang sits at the edge of the caldera with guaranteed views across it. You spend the afternoon and evening exploring the village: drink coffee or tea in a local home, walk out to the farm fields and meet the farmers, browse the market. You'll see the sunset from the village, weather permitting, before spending the night at Cafe Lava Hostel or a similar guesthouse.
The second day starts around 3 a.m. when your jeep picks you up for the drive to Mount Penanjakan, one of the most famous viewpoints in the region at 2,770 meters. On clear mornings you can see the sunrise and, beyond Mt. Bromo itself, Mount Semeru (Java's highest peak) and the Java Sea to the north. After sunrise, you drive down into the Sand Sea: a 10-kilometer stretch of black volcanic ash that borders Bromo on its northern side. You can ask the driver to stop and walk through this moonlike landscape if you want. The jeep parks near Luhur Poten temple, and from there it's a 45-minute hike one way to the crater rim of Mount Bromo. You pass the temple on the route (it's usually closed, but ask if you can look inside when it's open). Once you've reached the top and returned to the jeep, you head back for breakfast and a shower before the drive back to Surabaya or onward to Malang.

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
How early do I need to wake up on the second day of the Mt. Bromo tour?
The jeep departs around 3 a.m. to reach Mount Penanjakan in time for sunrise at 2,770 meters altitude. Bring warm clothes. Temperatures at that hour range from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius.
What is the Madakaripura waterfall like, and can I always visit it?
Madakaripura is a sacred site for the Tengger Hindu people and a 30-minute walk from the entrance. The walk is fairly easy but you'll get wet, so wear clothes you're comfortable soaking. The waterfall is only accessible when it hasn't rained heavily, because high water flow makes it unsafe to approach.

How long is the hike up Mount Bromo itself?
The hike from where the jeep parks in the Sand Sea to the crater rim takes 45 minutes one way. The route passes Luhur Poten temple, and the walk is steady but not technical. Take time to look at the landscape and be careful at the crater rim.

Breakfast is included on the second morning after you return from the crater. Coffee and tea are provided at mount Penanjakan during the sunrise stop, and fresh seasonal fruit is available daily. Lunches and dinners are not included, though you can eat at local spots in Cemara Lawang village.
