The experience
You start early (pickup at 7:00 am from your Surabaya hotel), and drive four hours through countryside to Tumpak Sewu, the waterfall locals call the Niagara of Indonesia. The walk down to the base is optional. Most travelers hike it to stand in front of the full drop surrounded by rock walls and green. After exploring, you continue to Malang, a hillside city with colonial architecture and cafes, where you spend your first night.
Day two begins at 12:30 am. A pre-dawn departure from Malang for the three-hour drive to Cemara Lawang village at Mount Bromo's rim. A private jeep takes you up to Pananjakan Peak, the highest viewpoint in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you watch the sunrise over the volcanic crater with warm tea in hand. You descend into the sea of sand, hike to Mount Bromo's summit for photos, then return to Cemara Lawang for breakfast. The afternoon brings a scenic drive through coffee plantations to Bondowoso, with a stop at a natural hot spring near the Ijen area before you reach your accommodation in Paltuding or Licin village.
The final day starts at 2:00 am. A 1.5-hour hike in darkness (masks provided) takes you to Ijen Crater's rim, where you'll see the turquoise sulfur lake and watch miners carrying heavy loads up from the volcano: a sight that stays with you. On the drive toward the ferry port, you can stop at a waterfall in Licin village for one last swim. The ferry crossing to Bali and hotel drop-off complete the journey.
