The Experience

Day one starts before dawn. You leave Surabaya between midnight and 3am, drive to Ngadisari Village, then head by jeep up Penanjakan Hill to catch the sunrise over Mount Bromo's crater. After coffee and the sunrise itself, you drive back down to the crater floor, walk across the whispering sand of Widodaren Valley for photos, then trek to the top of the volcano crater itself. Breakfast follows at a restaurant, then the drive continues south toward Bondowoso and Banyuwangi, with a lunch stop along the way. You check into a 3-star hotel in Bondowoso by mid-afternoon and rest.

Day two reverses the night. At 2am you drive to Paltuding, the starting point for Ijen Crater, and trek uphill for about 90 minutes to reach the crater rim. Between 3:30 and 4:30am, you stand inside the crater and watch the blue fire — a rare sulfur phenomenon that glows only in darkness, visible nowhere else on earth. A gas mask is provided because the air carries sulfur fumes. As dawn breaks, you move to the sunrise point to see the crater's greenish lake and the mountains beyond it lit by early light. By 6am you head back down to the starting point and drive to your final destination: Surabaya, Malang, or Ketapang Port, depending on your choice at booking.

Transport is a private air-conditioned 4WD jeep with a driver throughout. Your guide speaks English and travels with you both days. Inclusions are coffee on day one, lunch on day one, one night's accommodation, bottled water each day, and the gas mask for Ijen. The physical demand is moderate to high: day one involves a crater-rim trek at altitude after an early wake; day two is a night hike uphill in darkness, then a descent. Both days start very early.

Top questions

What time do we actually start on day one, and when do we get to bed?

Departure from Surabaya is between midnight and 3am on day one. You arrive at Penanjakan Hill by 4am to watch the sunrise at 4:30am. After breakfast around 9am and the drive south with a lunch stop, you check into your hotel in Bondowoso by 2pm and can rest the afternoon and evening before the 2am start on day two.

Is the blue fire trek difficult, and how long does the hike take?

The Ijen Crater trek is a night hike uphill that takes about 90 minutes to reach the crater rim, then another hour to descend after sunrise. The trail is steep and dark, so a moderate level of fitness and comfort with night hiking are needed. The gas mask is provided because sulfur fumes are present inside the crater.

What is the blue fire, and why does it only appear at night?

Ijen Crater is the only place on earth where blue fire naturally occurs. Sulfurous gases ignite as they rise from the crater floor, creating blue flames visible only in darkness. Once the sun rises, the flames are no longer visible to the eye, though the phenomenon continues.

Does the tour include meals, and what about water?

The tour includes a coffee break on day one morning, lunch during the drive to Bondowoso, and one night's accommodation with breakfast at the hotel. Bottled mineral water is provided each day. Dinner on day one and day two breakfast are your responsibility, though the hotel can arrange them.

Can I choose where to end the tour on day two?

Yes. After the Ijen trek and sunrise, the driver takes you to your chosen drop point: Surabaya, Malang, or Ketapang Port. Let the operator know your preference when you book.

What should I bring for the night hike and the sulfur fumes?

Wear warm layers for the pre-dawn cold at altitude, sturdy hiking boots with good grip for the dark trail, and a headlamp or flashlight. The gas mask is supplied, but bring a scarf or cloth as backup if you find the mask uncomfortable. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat help on day one's sunrise and the morning descent on day two.
