You check into a 3-star hotel in Bondowoso by mid-afternoon and rest.

Day two reverses the night. At 2am you drive to Paltuding, the starting point for Ijen Crater, and trek uphill for about 90 minutes to reach the crater rim. Between 3:30 and 4:30am, you stand inside the crater and watch the blue fire — a rare sulfur phenomenon that glows only in darkness, visible nowhere else on earth. A gas mask is provided because the air carries sulfur fumes. As dawn breaks, you move to the sunrise point to see the crater's greenish lake and the mountains beyond it lit by early light.
