The experience

The tour begins with a midnight pickup at your hotel, airport or train station in Surabaya or Malang. You'll drive two hours to the Mount Bromo area, then switch to a specialized jeep for the off-road climb. At 2:30 AM the jeep takes you higher. You stop for coffee or tea at 3:30 AM, then watch the sunrise at 5 AM from the rim. After photos at Widodaren Hill and a 45-minute hike to the crater top, you'll have breakfast and return by jeep by mid-morning.

At 10 AM you transfer to an air-conditioned car for the drive to Bondowoso, with lunch along the way. You'll check into Riverside Homestay by 2:30 PM, have dinner at a nearby restaurant at 6 PM, and rest before the second day's early start. That night you'll need a valid health certificate for Mount Ijen, which the operator can help you obtain.

On day two, a midnight drive takes you two hours to Mount Ijen. You hike with your guide to see the blue flames and crater lake as the sun rises, then have breakfast before heading back by 9 AM. From there, you're driven back to Surabaya or Malang (around 4 hours), arriving by 2:30 PM. If you prefer to end at Ketapang Port instead, that's an option with an additional fee.
