The experience

The blue fire of Ijen exists in only two places on earth, and this tour takes you down into the crater to see it. You start with a private pickup from your Bali hotel, travel by private vehicle and driver to Gilimanuk Port, then cross by ferry to Java. At the volcano base, you collect a gas mask and flashlight, drink warm tea, and meet your dedicated mountain guide. The 3km hike to the rim starts in darkness and takes you to 1,850m altitude, where you register and receive a safety briefing. From there, you descend into the crater itself to stand among the blue flames: a sight most travelers never reach because it requires the private guide, the gas mask, and the willingness to go down rather than stay at the rim.

Dawn breaks over the crater lake, which holds the world's largest highly acidic water body and glows turquoise in the morning light. After watching the sunrise, you make your way back up and out, then stop at Jagir Waterfall on the return journey: a cascade fed directly by water from the crater lake, surrounded by jungle. Your private driver then takes you back to your Bali hotel, completing the full 20-hour loop. Lunch at a local café is available for purchase on the way back if you want it.

The entire tour is private to your group: no shared vehicle, no strangers on the hike, no waiting for other travelers. A guide speaks English throughout, and the operator provides everything needed for the descent: gas mask, flashlight, winter jackets if the temperature drops, and the health certificate you complete before starting. The ferry, entrance tickets, and light snack at the volcano are all included.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the blue fire at Ijen, and why can you only see it at night?

The blue fire is a rare phenomenon where sulfurous gases ignite as they emerge from the crater. It burns blue and is visible only in darkness, which is why the hike begins at night and you descend while it is still dark to witness the flames before dawn breaks.

Do I need special fitness or training to hike Ijen Crater?

You need at least moderate physical fitness. The 3km hike to the rim climbs to 1,850m altitude, and the descent into the crater requires you to move carefully over rocky terrain while wearing a gas mask. The operator does not recommend the tour for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

How long is the entire tour, and when does it start?

The tour runs 20 hours from pickup at your Bali hotel to drop-off, so it is an overnight commitment. You are picked up in the evening, travel to the ferry, hike and descend during the night, watch the sunrise, and return to Bali in the morning.

What is Jagir Waterfall, and why is it on the route back?

Jagir Waterfall is a cascade in Banyuwangi fed by water flowing from the Ijen crater lake itself. It sits on the return journey and offers a chance to refresh in the jungle after the volcano trek.

Does the tour include everything I need, or do I have to rent gear?

Gas masks, flashlights, and winter jackets are all provided. Ferry tickets, entrance fees to the volcano, a health certificate, warm tea at the base, and a light snack are included. Your private driver and mountain guide are part of the booking, so you do not arrange transport or hire a guide separately.
