The experience
You start with pickup from your Bali area hotel in a private 4WD jeep. The driver takes you to Gilimanuk port on the west coast, where you board the ferry to Java. Once across, your guide meets you and drives to the Paltuding camping ground at the base of Mount Ijen. The trek up happens at night. You'll climb with a headlamp to reach the crater rim where the blue flame burns, a sulfuric phenomenon that glows brightest in darkness and is surrounded by the crater's acidic lake. This is the only time the flame is visible, which is why the timing matters.
After the trek, you head to the Mount Bromo area and sleep at one of the included hotels: Cafe Lava, Lava Hill or Grand Whiz. The second day starts very early. You drive to a viewpoint on Mount Penanjakan or a similar vantage, arriving before sunrise to watch the light break over Mount Bromo's crater and the surrounding sand sea. The landscape shifts from dark to gold as the sun rises. The scale of the caldera becomes clear in daylight. Breakfast is included, and you have the option to ride a horse up the crater rim itself for an extra cost if you want to get closer.
The tour ends with a drive back to Bali for drop-off at your hotel, or you can arrange to finish in Surabaya or Malang instead. The jeep is air-conditioned, the guide is experienced, and the inclusions cover the ferry, gas mask for the sulfur at Ijen, parking, tolls, fuel and insurance, so there are no surprise costs once you're on the road.

Top questions
What exactly is the blue fire at Mount Ijen?
The blue flame is burning sulfuric gas that rises from cracks in the crater floor and ignites when it meets the air. It glows brightest at night, which is why the trek happens after dark. During the day the flame is invisible against the sunlight. The crater also holds an acidic sulfur lake, and the combination of the flame and the lake surrounded by steep crater walls is what makes Ijen distinctive among Indonesian volcanoes.
How difficult is the trek to Mount Ijen's crater?
The climb is moderate and takes roughly two hours to reach the rim. You'll be walking uphill on a volcanic trail at night with a headlamp, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. The air gets thinner as you climb, and sulfur fumes are present near the crater, which is why a gas mask is provided and included in the tour.
What time do I wake up on day two for Mount Bromo?
You'll have an early wake-up to reach the viewpoint before sunrise. The exact time depends on the season and where the sun rises, but expect to leave the hotel around 3 or 4 a.m. to be in position when light breaks over the crater.
Is the horse ride up Mount Bromo included?
No, horse riding is optional and costs an extra 300,000 Indonesian rupiah if you want to do it. The tour includes the jeep ride to the viewpoint and the sunrise viewing from there. The horse option is only if you want to go higher up the crater rim itself.
Where does the tour end, and how do I get back to my hotel?
The jeep returns you to Bali and drops you at your hotel. Alternatively, you can arrange to finish in Surabaya or Malang instead if that suits your onward travel plans. The drop-off location is your choice at booking.
