The experience
The tour opens with a drive from Surabaya to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, a 200-meter curtain of water that drops in a single sheet across the cliff face. After time at the waterfall, you head to Mount Bromo in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and settle into simple accommodation with a private room and bathroom. The first day is travel and arrival. The real climbing starts before dawn on day two.
Day two begins at 3 a.m. with a pickup for the jeep ride into Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. You watch the sunrise from the rim, then hike up Mount Bromo itself: the most accessible of the three volcanoes on this tour. After the hike and breakfast back at the lodge, you move to accommodation near Ijen Crater for the night. The second day is short on sleep and long on altitude gain, but it sets up the final push.
The Ijen hike starts between midnight and early morning from Paltuding, the trailhead. The climb takes 5 to 6 hours and includes a hunt for the rare blue flames (a sulfuric gas that ignites as it meets the air) visible only in darkness. You descend after sunrise, rest, eat breakfast, and finish at Ketapang harbor. From there, you can take the included ferry ticket to Bali or arrange return transport to Surabaya. An English-speaking guide and driver stay with you for all three days. The tour provides a gas mask, headlamp and health certificate for the Ijen climb. Breakfast is included on days 2 and 3. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
