The experience

The tour picks you up from your hotel, airport or train station between 11:30 PM, then drives about three hours to the Mount Bromo area. You'll arrive in darkness and transfer to a 4WD jeep for the steep climb to Mount Penanjakan, the best viewpoint on the mountain. The temperature drops to around 7–10 degrees Celsius, and roadside stalls sell hot coffee, tea, noodles and corn. You can also rent a jacket for a small fee if you need one. The sunrise breaks around 4:30 AM, and you'll have time to photograph the light spreading across the volcanic landscape before heading down.

After sunrise, the driver drops you two kilometers from the crater. The walk across the Sea of Sand, the flat volcanic plain surrounding Bromo, takes about 45 minutes on foot, though horse rides are available for an extra cost. Once you reach the crater, you climb 250 stairs to stand on the rim itself, where you can look down into the caldera. You return to the jeep by 8 or 9 AM. If you want to add the Madakaripura Waterfall, it's about an hour's drive away. The entrance fee and a local guide are not included in the tour price, and you'll arrange those separately when you arrive. The waterfall stop extends your day to 3 or 4 PM before the final drop-off.

The tour is private, so it's just you and your guide: no group of strangers. Your guide speaks English and stays with you throughout the crater hike. All transport is air-conditioned except the jeep ride up the mountain, and the park entrance fee is already paid. Bring layers: the pre-dawn cold at the viewpoint is real, and the hike involves steady climbing. You'll need moderate fitness for the stairs and the walk across the sand, and the early start means very little sleep the night before.
