The Experience

The first thing I remember is the cool spray on my face—standing under Madakaripura waterfall, shoes already soaked, laughing because there’s no way to stay dry. Our guide, Pak Dwi, handed out these thin ponchos that flapped around as we walked in. The air smelled green, if that makes sense—like moss and river stones after rain. A couple of local kids zipped past us on bike taxis, grinning. I tried to say “terima kasih” and probably mangled it; they just smiled wider.

After drying off (sort of), we switched to a battered jeep for the drive up to Bromo. The road twisted through villages where women sold tiny bananas by the roadside and old men sat smoking clove cigarettes. It was quieter than I expected—no big sunrise crowds, just us and a few others. At one point, Pak Dwi pointed out Mount Batok and told us how locals believe Bromo is home to ancient spirits. Not sure if it was the altitude or his story, but something felt different up there.

The walk across Bromo’s sea of sand was almost lunar—gray dust crunching underfoot, wind tugging at my jacket. We stopped at Pura Luhur Poten temple for a minute; incense drifted on the breeze while someone inside prayed quietly. Climbing up to the crater rim took some effort (I’m not exactly fit), but looking into that steaming caldera… I still think about that view sometimes when I can’t sleep. We didn’t rush—Pak Dwi let us take our time before heading back down toward Surabaya as dusk crept in. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so calm after a day like that.
