The experience
The tour starts with a pickup between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. from anywhere in Malang, then a shared 4WD jeep climbs toward Mount Bromo's sunrise viewpoint over the next two hours. You arrive in time to watch the sun rise over the crater between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m., then spend the morning visiting Love Hill and Dinosaurs Valley before descending into the crater itself to see Pura Luhur Poten temple and pass Mount Batok. The black sand desert and savannah fill the late morning, and by noon you're heading to the basecamp at Tumpang for a break before the long drive to Bondowoso.
Day two starts at 12:30 a.m. with a trek up Ijen Crater that takes roughly two hours. Between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m. you watch for the blue fire (a rare sulfurous phenomenon visible only in darkness), then stay to see the sunrise over the crater and Mount Raung. The descent takes an hour, and after a rest stop you head to Ketapang Port, arriving around 10:00 a.m. The ferry ticket to Gilimanuk (Bali) is included. Car transfer onward in Bali costs extra and depends on your destination.
Budget accommodation means no hot water for showers and squat toilets. The guide speaks basic English and can use Google Translate if needed. Breakfast is included both mornings. You'll need to arrange lunch and dinner yourself. The tour closes on Fridays during the first week of each month due to local ceremony, so avoid booking tours that start on Thursday of those weeks. Volcanic activity or weather changes do not qualify for refunds as long as officials declare the sites safe and open.

Top questions
What exactly is the blue fire at Ijen Crater that I'll see on day two?
The blue fire is a rare sulfurous flame that rises from the crater's vents and is visible only at night. You'll watch for it between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m. on day two before the sunrise washes it out. It occurs because sulfurous gases ignite as they meet cooler air, creating an electric-blue glow across the crater floor.
Do I need any special fitness level or health clearance to do this tour?
You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with back problems, heart conditions or serious medical issues. A doctor's certificate may be required for certain conditions. The minimum age is 13.
What's included in the budget accommodation, and can I upgrade to a better hotel?
Budget accommodation in Bondowoso includes a bed and a room but no hot water for showers and squat toilets only. You can upgrade to a premium hotel for an additional 550,000 IDR per night. Choose this option at checkout.
How does the tour end, and how do I get to my hotel in Bali?
The tour ends at Ketapang Port around 10:00 a.m. on day two. Your ferry ticket to Gilimanuk Port in Bali is included, but car transfer from there to your Bali hotel is not. Contact the operator's WhatsApp for pricing based on your destination.
What meals are provided, and when do I eat?
Breakfast is included both mornings before the climbs. Lunch and dinner are not included, so you'll need to arrange or purchase meals during the tour. There are opportunities to eat at rest stops and in Bondowoso.
What happens if the tour is canceled due to weather or volcanic activity?
If volcanic activity or weather changes occur but officials declare the sites safe and open, the tour runs with no refund. If the Indonesian tourism authority closes the sites or declares a force majeure event, you'll be offered a different date or a full refund.
