Ijen Crater Trek from Banyuwangi: Sulfur Miners & Blue Fire
The sulfur miners you pass on the way up carry backbreaking loads to fund their families.
A 12–14 hour trek from Banyuwangi to the summit of Mount Ijen, where you'll climb through darkness alongside sulfur miners, reach the rim of one of Earth's largest acidic lakes, and watch the sunrise over the turquoise crater. Private guide, transport, gas mask, headlamp, entrance ticket and coffee break are included. Children from age 6 are welcome; moderate fitness is required.
Step-by-step itinerary
Trek to Ijen Crater and sunrise view
- Ascend Ijen volcano summit in darkness
- Meet sulfur miners on the way
- Arrive at sunrise spot
- View turquoise acidic lake and surroundings
The Experience
The trek starts before dawn. Your guide picks you up from Banyuwangi and drives to the trailhead, where you begin climbing in darkness with a headlamp. Along the way, you'll encounter the sulfur miners—workers who carry bamboo baskets loaded with 80–100kg of sulfur down the mountain in a single trip, their shoulders bearing the weight of the load. The climb is steady and the air grows thinner as you gain elevation. A coffee break partway up gives you a moment to rest before the final push to the rim.
Once you reach the summit, you head straight to the sunrise spot. When the light breaks, the view opens across the Ijen plateau: a massive crater filled with turquoise water—one of the biggest acidic lakes on Earth. The color is vivid and strange, a result of the sulfur and minerals in the water. From the rim, you can see the blue fire (a natural phenomenon caused by sulfur combustion) from a safe distance of about 1km away. All safety equipment—gas mask and headlamp—is provided, and your guide stays with you throughout to explain what you're seeing and manage the conditions.
The descent takes several hours. Your legs will feel the work by the end, and the full day—12 to 14 hours from pickup to return—is physically demanding. This is not a casual walk. You need moderate fitness to manage the climb, the altitude and the early start. Weather plays a role: clear skies reveal the crater's full beauty, but clouds can obscure the view. The trek is not recommended for travelers with heart conditions, back or spinal problems, asthma, or poor cardiovascular health. Pregnant travelers should not go. Children from age 6 can join if accompanied by an adult.
