The Experience

There's something unsettling about leaving your hotel at half past midnight. The road to Paltuding is empty, the air still warm, and you're heading toward a volcano that glows in the dark. The drive takes an hour from Banyuwangi, and by the time you reach the registration point, your group—usually a mix of backpackers and a few solo travelers—is wide awake and a little nervous. That's when the guide hands you a gas mask. Not to scare you. Just to wear it when you're close to the sulfur vents.

The hike up Kawah Ijen crater takes about ninety minutes. It's steep, it's dark except for headlamps, and the path is loose volcanic rock that shifts under your boots. But then you reach the rim and see it: the blue flames. They're real, not a trick of the light. Sulfurous gas ignites as it rises from the crater, burning in thin, electric-blue lines across the black ground.
