The experience
The trek starts in darkness, either from your Banyuwangi hotel or from Ketapang ferry port if you're arriving by sea. Your guide leads a small shared group up the volcano's slope, and the climb itself is the point. You're moving through the night to reach the crater rim before dawn. The blue fire appears as you approach the summit: sulfur gases ignite naturally as they escape from vents in the crater floor, burning with an eerie blue-white glow that only shows up in darkness. It's a real geological phenomenon, not a light show, and the sight lasts as long as you're standing there watching it.
Alongside the flames, you'll see the sulfur miners who work the crater year-round, hauling loads of raw sulfur out by hand and carrying them down the steep slope on foot. The guide explains the work and the miners' presence is part of what makes the crater active and visible. Once the sun rises, the blue fire fades but the crater itself opens up (the scale of it, the colors in the rock, the sulfur deposits), all become clear in daylight. The whole experience, from pickup to drop-off back at your hotel or the ferry port, takes about 8 hours.
All safety equipment is provided: the gear you need for the trek and the volcanic environment. The guide speaks English and stays with the group throughout. Bring water (bottled water is included), and wear clothes you don't mind getting dusty. The terrain is steep and uneven, so a moderate level of fitness matters. This isn't a casual walk. Children can come if accompanied by an adult, but the trek isn't recommended for pregnant travelers.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is the blue fire at Ijen, and when can you see it?
The blue fire is sulfur gas burning as it escapes from volcanic vents in the crater floor. It only glows visibly at night, which is why the trek climbs in darkness. Once the sun rises, the flames fade into the daylight but the crater and its sulfur deposits remain visible.
How difficult is the climb to the Ijen Crater rim?
The trek is steep and takes about 8 hours round-trip including the ascent, time at the summit, and descent. You need moderate fitness to handle the uneven terrain and the altitude gain. It's not a casual hike but it's a standard volcano trek, not a technical climb.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?
No. Hotel pickup in Banyuwangi or ferry port pickup at Ketapang is included, and the guide brings you back to the same place at the end of the tour.
What should I bring, and what's provided on the trek?
All safety equipment for the volcanic environment is provided. Bring clothes suitable for hiking in darkness and dust. Wear sturdy shoes. Bottled water is included. You don't need to carry your own.
Can I do this tour if I'm arriving by ferry?
Yes. Pickup is available at Ketapang ferry port, and you'll be returned there at the end of the tour, so you can time it around your ferry schedule.
