The experience

Yaxha sits between two lakes, and the temples rise high enough that you see both of them from the top. The tour picks you up at your hotel after lunch, drives you to the park, and spends the afternoon exploring the archaeological site with a guide who covers Mayan history, the layout of the ruins, and the flora and fauna around them. The timing is built around reaching one of the temples by 6 p.m., when the sun hits the water and the site empties out.

Round-trip transportation is included with an air-conditioned van, and the driver handles the route from Flores or Tikal back to your hotel. You're back by 8 p.m. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and can photograph your group while you're there. Entry fees to Yaxha National Park are covered. Bring hiking shoes, a rain jacket, bug spray, sunscreen, and a flashlight. Snacks help on the drive.

What is Yaxha like compared to Tikal?

Yaxha is an archaeological site close to Tikal but smaller and less crowded. It sits between two lakes, so from the top of several temples you can see water on both sides: a view Tikal doesn't offer from the same vantage. The site has its own Mayan structures and history, and the sunset from the temple tops is considered the best in the region.
