The experience
The tour starts with pickup at Mundo Maya Airport or at the "I Love Petén" sign on the Isle of Flores, then travels by private air-conditioned shuttle through small towns toward Tikal National Park. Priority tickets are already included, so you skip the entrance line. The drive to the visitor center covers 16 kilometers inside the park, and your certified guide gives you 15 minutes to walk the scale model and use facilities before the hike begins.
From the visitor center, you walk jungle trails with your guide explaining the flora, fauna and archaeology as you approach the central square. The Grand Plaza opens onto the Temple of the Great Jaguar, Temple II, the North and South Acropolises and the Mayan Ball Game court. Temple IV, also called the Temple of the Bicephalous Snake, demands the most energy to climb but rewards you with an incredible panoramic view across the canopy. The Lost World Pyramid offers stairs and a 360-degree perspective. Temple V, one of the best restorations at Tikal, closes the walking portion before you return to the visitor center.
Lunch is a full meal with traditional regional dishes served at the visitor center. After eating, you board the shuttle for the return journey to the Isle of Flores or Mundo Maya Airport. The entire tour runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off.
