The experience

Temple IV rises above the canopy at Tikal, and the tour builds around reaching it. You start with pickup at your Flores hotel or Mundo Maya International Airport, then drive 63 kilometers through jungle landscape and past Lake Petén Itzá: a journey of roughly an hour and fifteen minutes that crosses several villages fringing the lake. The road itself frames what you are about to see: the vegetation thickens, the light changes, and by the time you arrive at the site, the scale of what the Maya built here becomes real.

An expert guide leads you through eight major structures across Tikal's 16 square kilometers. You walk the Central Acropolis, where rulers lived in interconnected palaces; stand in the Plaza Mayor, the ceremonial heart where rituals and markets happened; climb the Great Jaguar Temple for views across the site; and reach Temple IV, the highest point, where the jungle spreads in every direction below you. The Lost World Square, an astronomical complex, and the Temple of Masks round out the stops. Howler monkeys, toucans and coati move through the canopy as you walk. The guide explains what you are seeing: both the architecture and the living forest that has reclaimed parts of the site. Lunch is included during the tour.

The return journey follows the same route back to Flores. If your flight leaves in the evening, the tour includes a complimentary transfer to Isla de Flores, where you have free time to walk the cobbled streets, visit craft shops, sit at lakefront cafes and reach viewpoints overlooking the water before the 6 p.m. transfer to the airport. Those staying in Flores return to their hotel at the end of the day. The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout.
