The experience

The tour begins with pickup at your Flores hotel or the "I love Petén" sign around 15 minutes before departure, then a 50-minute drive in air-conditioned transport to Tikal's main entrance. After a 20-minute walk through the visitor center checkpoint, you enter the jungle in darkness with your local guide and climb Temple IV (the park's second-tallest structure at 57 meters), to reach the summit just as the sun breaks through the fog. This is the centerpiece of the morning: watching light flood the canopy while howler monkeys roar below.

Once daylight settles, the archaeological tour begins. You walk the Grand Plaza, surrounded by pyramids and ceremonial buildings, and climb Temple of the Great Jaguar (45 meters high), which sits at the plaza's heart and is Tikal's most recognizable landmark worldwide.
