The experience

The tour starts at 7:30 a.m. at the I LOVE PETÉN sign on Isla de Flores, where you meet your guide and board a shared air-conditioned vehicle for the drive into the jungle. After roughly 20 minutes, you arrive at the Tikal Visitor Center, where a scale model of the entire site helps you understand the layout before you enter. From there, the real exploration begins: a series of jungle hikes along marked trails, surrounded by the sounds and sights of the rainforest. Your guide, with more than seven years of experience in the area, points out wildlife, including howler monkeys, and explains the Mayan structures and their place in the civilization that built them.

The route takes you through several major sites. The Central Square is ringed by Temple I (the Temple of the Great Jaguar, built as a tomb for a powerful ruler) and Temple II, from which you get sweeping views across the entire plaza. You'll also see the Mayan Ball Game court, where rituals tied to spiritual beliefs were performed. Temple III, built around 810 AD, rises about 55 meters and still shows carved details at its crest. Temple IV, the tallest pyramid on the site at approximately 70 meters, offers views over the canopy and is famous for sunrises and sunsets. It was also used as a filming location for Star Wars. The Complex of the Lost World is the oldest ceremonial square, dating to around 400 BC, with platforms and stairs aligned to solar events like solstices and equinoxes.

After exploring the major temples and squares, you head to a local restaurant for lunch, where you can rest and talk through what you've seen. The return journey to Flores or Mundo Maya Airport takes place in the afternoon. Park entry (Q150 per person, paid in cash in Guatemalan quetzales) can be purchased in advance online through the Government of Guatemala's ticketing system or bought on arrival. Your guide speaks English or Spanish, and the entire day runs about eight hours from start to finish.
