The experience

The tour picks you up at your Flores hotel at noon and drives you to Tikal National Park, arriving by 2:15 p.m. From there, your guide leads you through the park's major temples and structures, pointing out Mayan history, archaeology, and the flora and fauna you'll encounter along the way. The pace is set to reach the Lost World pyramid by 6 p.m., timed for sunset. After the light fades, you return to the parking lot and drive back to Flores, arriving around 8 p.m.

The van is air-conditioned and includes bottled water for the walk. Your guide speaks English or Spanish, and all park fees are covered. Bring a flashlight for the return walk, comfortable shoes, a rain jacket, bug spray and sunscreen. There's no ATM inside the park, so withdraw cash in Flores before departure.
