The experience
How do you get to Tikal without renting a car in a place you've just landed? The tour picks you up at Mundo Maya International Airport or meets you in Flores at the "Yo Amo Petén" area, then drives you through El Remate (a stop where you'll see Lake Petén Itzá spread out across the horizon) before arriving at the park. Once there, a certified guide leads you through the restored squares and ancient structures, and you'll have time to climb Temple IV, the towering temple known worldwide from Star Wars and one of the highest structures in the Mayan world.
The walk takes you past tropical birds, monkeys moving through the trees, and coatis on the trails. The jungle is alive around you as your guide explains the history and layout of the city. You'll visit the Lost World complex, an astronomical center of the ancient city, before heading back. Lunch is a local meal served after the tour ends, giving you time to rest and talk through what you've seen before the drive back to Flores.
If you're staying in Flores, the tour ends there and your day is yours. If you have an afternoon flight, you'll have free time to walk the colorful streets of Isla de Flores on your own before a 6:00 pm transfer back to the airport. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and the vehicle is air-conditioned.
