The experience
The day starts with a drive past Lake Petén Itzá, where you'll have time for photos at the "I Love Petén" sign before heading to the park entrance. Once you buy your admission tickets in cash (Quetzales only), the bus takes you another 20 minutes to the Visitor Center. Your guide gives you 15 minutes to explore the museum or grab coffee, then leads you onto the jungle trails where the real walk begins.
You'll move through the forest on marked paths, stopping at the Temple of the Great Jaguar, Temple II, the North and South Acropolises, and the Mayan Ball Court as your guide explains the archaeology, flora and fauna along the way. Temple IV is the major climb. It demands energy but rewards you with a view that stretches across the entire green canopy. The Lost World Pyramid (Mundo Perdido) offers a 360-degree panorama and time to photograph it. Temple V, one of the best-preserved structures, closes out the walking portion before you head back to the Visitor Center.
At the end, you have free time at the Visitor Center to buy food (meals aren't included in the tour price) before the drive back to Flores. The whole experience is built around walking and climbing at your own pace, with your guide stopping to talk about what you're seeing rather than rushing through a fixed schedule.
