The experience
The guide picks you up at your hotel and drives 90 minutes to Tikal National Park. Once inside, most of the walking happens under the forest canopy, so you stay shaded but surrounded by spider monkeys, howler monkeys and dozens of bird species. The route moves through Twin Pyramid Complex Q first, then opens onto the Great Plaza: your first chance to climb a pyramid and see the carved monument of the 29th king. From there a causeway leads behind the Great Jaguar Temple, the most recognizable structure in Tikal.
The guide takes you through the Central Acropolis to show how Maya families lived, then to the North Acropolis where the royal tombs sit. This positioning puts you directly in front of Temple I, the mortuary temple of Hasaw Chaan Kawil, one of Tikal's most powerful rulers. The route then heads to the Lost World Complex, the earliest occupied area in the city and its astronomical observatory, where you climb the Great Pyramid. From the top you get a 360-degree view over the canopy and a clear sight of the tallest structures: the vantage point where only the ruler and high priest were permitted to stand in the city's height.
The final major climb is Temple IV, one of the tallest single structures in the western hemisphere. This is the spot George Lucas filmed for Star Wars: Episode IV. A New Hope in 1977. After descending through the forest trails, you eat a hot local lunch at the park restaurant with a cold drink, then return to your hotel in the air-conditioned vehicle for the 90-minute drive back.
