The experience
The tour starts with pickup from the Isle of Flores in an air-conditioned van, where you'll meet other travelers heading to the same site. A 15-minute stop at El Remate lets you grab snacks or drinks before the drive continues toward Yaxhá. Once you reach the visitor center, you'll pay the park entrance fee (Q. 80 per person in Guatemalan currency, cash only) and then drive two kilometers to the parking lot where the walking portion begins.
Your certified guide leads you through the rainforest under the canopy, explaining the history and layout of this Mayan city: its squares, temples and astronomical complexes. The walk builds toward the main event: climbing Temple 216, the highest structure on the site. You reach the top as the afternoon light shifts, and from there you watch the sun descend toward the horizon, turning the Yaxhá lagoon and the surrounding jungle gold and red. After the descent, a night walk returns you to the vehicle for the transfer back to Flores.
