The experience

Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby and you drive 90 minutes to reach Tikal National Park. Once there, you spend four hours on foot moving through the ruins with your guide, who explains the history and function of each major structure as you walk. The site contains roughly 5,000 pre-Hispanic buildings across 16 square kilometers, but only 15% has been restored and opened to visitors. Your guide takes you to the most significant ones.

The Grand Square and its surrounding acropolises form the heart of the tour. You can climb Temple II, which stands 38 meters high, to face the Temple of the Great Jaguar across the plaza. That temple, 45 meters tall, is Tikal's most recognizable structure and once served as a ceremonial and ritual space. The remains of a Mayan ruler were found inside it. Your guide also shows you Temple III, a funeral temple built in 810 AD, and takes you through the Lost World complex, the largest ceremonial grouping from Tikal's earlier period, which was rebuilt multiple times and influenced by the distant city of Teotihuacán.
