The experience
The tour picks you up at the "I Love Petén" sign in Flores in the afternoon and drives you through small towns to Tikal's main entrance, where you'll buy park admission. From there, a 16-kilometer route through the jungle takes you past the visitor center and into the archaeological site itself. Your guide explains the flora, fauna and history as you walk the trails to the Grand Plaza, where the Temple of the Great Jaguar, North Acropolis and other structures come into view.
The route builds toward Temple IV, one of the park's highest pyramids. You climb to the top in the late afternoon light, and from there you watch the sun drop below the horizon, painting the sky in color across the ridges of the surrounding temples. As darkness falls, the jungle sounds begin: the night shift of wildlife waking up. The guide gives you time to take photographs and absorb the moment before leading a night walk back down to the vehicle.
The return drive to Flores takes you back through the same route, arriving after dark. An expert guide leads the whole experience in either English or Spanish, and the air-conditioned transport keeps you comfortable during the long drive. Bring cash for any purchases at the visitor center, sunscreen and insect repellent for the jungle, water and snacks for the afternoon, and a photo of your passport for park entry.
