The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive to the ATV ranch, where a guide walks through safety and you mount a horse for a 15-minute ride through tropical landscape. Once back, you climb into an ATV or buggy and drive off-road yourself: mud, hidden trails, the whole thing. A stop at an organic farm lets you taste and learn about Dominican coffee, chocolate, cigars and other local products (mamajuana is available if you're 18 or older). From there you drive to a 25-foot-deep water cave to swim and explore, then out to Macao Beach, where limestone cliffs frame the sand and waves before the ride back to the ranch.

In the afternoon, you're picked up again and taken to the party boat at Bávaro Beach. After a safety briefing, you get snorkeling gear and follow a guide into the water to see schools of fish along the coral reefs. Back on the boat, the bar opens with Dominican liquor, beer, tropical fruit, snacks and juice. The second stop is the natural pool: shallow water created by a sandbar where you can walk around in the water, still surrounded by music and drinks. The boat returns you to the beach by late afternoon.

A live guide in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French leads both the morning ATV portion and the afternoon boat. The tour runs 8 hours total and is suitable for all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Children from age 3 are welcome.
