The Experience

Ever wondered what real Dominican chocolate tastes like when you’re still covered in a bit of mud from an ATV? I didn’t either, until our guide José handed me a steaming cup at this little farm outside Punta Cana. We’d just bounced through tiny villages — kids waving, dogs chasing us for a minute — and that first taste of coffee was so strong I nearly coughed. The air smelled like wet earth and sugarcane. There was this older woman roasting beans who smiled at my Spanish (I tried). I think she understood most of it.

The next stop was a water cave — honestly, it looked almost fake with that blue light coming up from below. We all hesitated at first but ended up jumping in. Cold shock, then laughter echoing off the rocks. José said the Taíno people used to come here for rituals; he pointed out some marks on the wall but I was mostly focused on not losing my flip-flops. Afterward, we drove out to Macao Beach and just stood there for a while. The sand stuck to everything, but the view — pale cliffs and wild surf — made me forget about it.

There’s a break before the next part (enough time to rinse off and change), which is good because you’ll want dry clothes for the catamaran cruise. The boat itself is loud in all the best ways: music blasting, people dancing merengue (or trying to), drinks everywhere. I’d never snorkeled over coral before — saw these little electric-blue fish darting between fans of coral, sun flickering down through the water. Someone handed me pineapple and rum while I dried off on deck. It’s funny how quickly strangers start feeling like friends after you’ve danced together under that kind of sky.
