The experience
The trek starts with a 1-hour drive from Moshi through the village of Marangu to the national park gate, where permits are processed while you watch the organized chaos of other climbing crews preparing to depart. Day one takes you through rainforest on muddy, slippery trails for 4 to 5 hours to Mandara Huts, where you sleep in a bed instead of a tent. Your guide points out local flora, fauna, and wildlife as the path climbs steadily. Gaiters and trekking poles help here.
Days two and three move you through moorland and into semi-desert as elevation rises from 2,740 meters to 4,695 meters. You pass giant lobelias and groundsels, stop for lunch with views of Mawenzi peak, and spend nights at Horombo Huts and then Kibo Huts. The landscape shifts from heathland to a moonscape saddle connecting the two volcanic cones. Temperatures drop noticeably, and the air thins enough that you feel the altitude.
Day four is the summit push: you start between midnight and 2 a.m. from Kibo Huts and climb 4 kilometers through heavy scree and possibly snow in switchback formation toward Gillman's Point on the crater rim. The sunrise here is the reward for the mental and physical effort. Faster hikers reach Uhuru Peak itself to watch it. From Gillman's Point, one more hour of snow-covered terrain leads to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. You descend the same day to Horombo Huts, a 14-kilometer drop that takes 5 to 6 hours. Day five is the final descent through rainforest back to Mandara Huts for lunch, then to Marangu Gate where you receive your summit certificate. A vehicle returns you to Moshi, about 45 minutes away. The descent is steep, wet, and muddy. Gaiters and poles are essential again.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 15 years). Under 12: they can't be included in the booking.
What's the Marangu Route and why is it different from other Kilimanjaro paths?
The Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodations along the trail, so you sleep in beds rather than tents. It passes through five distinct ecological zones (rainforest, moorland, semi-desert, alpine desert, and the glaciated summit) over five days, making it popular with first-time climbers who want comfort and a defined schedule.
When do we start climbing to the summit, and what should I expect?
The summit push begins between midnight and 2 a.m. on day four from Kibo Huts. You climb 4 kilometers through scree and possibly snow in switchback formation for 5 to 7 hours to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The ascent is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek, but you're rewarded with a sunrise at Gillman's Point or the summit itself, then descend the same day to Horombo Huts.
What's included in the trek, and who makes up the climbing team?
The trek includes a professional mountain guide who speaks English, cooks, porters, government park fees, meals, and health monitoring equipment (oxygen cylinder and pulse oximeter). Your guide provides insights into local culture, flora, and fauna throughout the five days.
How much walking happens each day, and what's the terrain like?
Day one is 7 kilometers over 4 to 5 hours through muddy rainforest; day two is 11 kilometers over 6 to 8 hours through moorland; day three is 10 kilometers over 6 to 8 hours into semi-desert; day four combines a 4-kilometer summit push (5 to 7 hours) followed by a 14-kilometer descent (5 to 6 hours); day five is 18 kilometers over 6 to 7 hours back to the gate. Terrain ranges from slippery forest paths to open moorland, scree slopes, and snow near the summit.
Do I need previous climbing experience, and what fitness level is required?
No previous climbing experience is necessary. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness and be comfortable with sustained walking at altitude. The trek is not recommended for travelers with altitude sensitivity, respiratory conditions, spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
