The experience
You arrive in Moshi or nearby Arusha and get picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. The drive takes you along the Arusha-Moshi highway to the park gate, where Kilimanjaro floats above the clouds overlooking the lower Kenya Amboseli national park. Mount Kilimanjaro National Park covers 1,688 square kilometers of montane forest and alpine terrain, and the trek itself spans seven days of climbing to Uhuru, the Swahili word for freedom.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, German, Russian or one of two other languages, and porters carry the tents, cooking gear and most of your belongings so you move lighter up the mountain. Breakfast, dinner and all meals in between are included throughout the trek. The route takes you through the forest belt and into higher altitude zones as you ascend Kibo, the dormant volcanic cone that forms the summit. Mawenzi and Shira, the other two cones, are extinct and visible from the trail.
Children from age six can join the trek. The climb requires at least moderate physical fitness. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or who are pregnant. Tents are provided, and the company, Wilderness Alternative Expedition, has years of guiding experience on all Kilimanjaro routes ranging from five to nine days.
