The experience
The Lemosho Route begins with a three-hour drive from your hotel to Londorossi Gate, then a bumpy 15-kilometer approach to the Montana forest edge. Your first day's walk is short: about three hours through rainforest where white and black colobus monkeys move through the canopy above you. This gentle start lets you settle into the rhythm before the terrain shifts. By day three, the vegetation thins as you move through moorland dotted with Lobelia and Erica plants, and from Shira 1 Camp you can see the snow-capped summit of Kibo across the plateau.
Days four and five introduce the acclimatization strategy: you climb to Lava Tower at 4,640 meters, rest and eat lunch while your body adjusts, then descend to sleep at a lower elevation. The Barranco Wall on day six is the steepest section of the route (some parts require handholds and pulling yourself up), but your guide stays close throughout. After crossing the last water point at Karanga Valley, you reach Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push. The final ascent starts at midnight: a five-hour climb through heavy scree toward Stella Point, then a one-hour walk along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. You stand on the Roof of Africa as the sun rises, then descend back to Barafu Camp and continue down to Mweka Camp over the course of the day.
All meals on the mountain are provided, along with government fees, national park permits, camping, rescue service, and the wages of guides and porters. Airport transfers run both directions between Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language you choose at booking. Children from age 10 are welcome on the trek.

Is this one for you?Eight days is the full commitment the Lemosho Route requires, which means you cannot combine it with other activities in the same trip unless you add extra days in Moshi or Arusha before or after. Choose this trek if you have the time to let acclimatization work properly and want a route that prioritizes your body's adjustment to altitude over speed.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (10 to 14 years). Children under 10 can't be included in the booking.
What is the Lemosho Route and why is it different from other paths up Kilimanjaro?
The Lemosho Route approaches from the west, starting in the Montana rainforest and crossing the Shira Plateau before joining the main summit trail. It offers excellent acclimatization because the route climbs gradually through distinct vegetation zones (rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert) giving your body time to adjust to altitude changes across the eight days.
How does the "trek high, sleep low" acclimatization technique work?
On day five, you climb to Lava Tower at 4,640 meters, rest there for about an hour while your body experiences the higher altitude, then descend to sleep at Barranco Camp at a lower elevation. This pattern repeats on the route and trains your body to handle altitude changes without pushing too hard in one day.
What happens on summit night and how long does the final climb take?
You wake at midnight from Barafu Camp, eat hot tea and biscuits, then begin ascending in darkness toward Stella Point. The climb to Stella Point takes about five hours through heavy scree, then you rest briefly before a one-hour walk along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. You reach the summit as the sun rises and can spend time taking photos before beginning the descent back to Barafu Camp and then down to Mweka Camp.
What wildlife or plants will I see along the Lemosho Route?
The rainforest section on day two hosts white and black colobus monkeys in the canopy. As you climb into moorland, you'll see Giant Lobelias and Erica plants dotting the landscape. Higher up, Senecio kilimanjari and smaller Lobelia deckenii plants appear. The alpine desert near Barafu Camp is dry and rocky, with views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit trail.
Are there water sources along the trek, and how much water will I need?
The last reliable water point is at Karanga Valley on day six. After that, you rely on what you carry or what the camp provides. Your guide will advise on water needs for each section. The higher you climb, the less water is available, so planning ahead with your guide is important.
What is included in the trek cost and what do I need to arrange separately?
The trek includes all meals on the mountain, government fees, national park permits, camping, rescue service, guide and porter wages, and round-trip airport transfers between Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport. You arrange your own accommodation before day one and after the trek ends, plus any gear you don't already own.
