The Experience
I still remember the first smell of earth at Machame Gate — kind of damp, sharp, almost sweet under all that moss. We’d barely stepped out of the van when our guide, Daniel, started chatting with the rangers in Swahili. There was this quiet buzz everywhere: porters balancing loads on their heads, people fussing with gaiters (I had no idea what I was doing). The rainforest swallowed us up so quickly that within minutes it felt like we’d left the world behind. My boots were caked in mud before lunch — Daniel just grinned and said, “Pole pole.” Slow and steady.
The next days blurred into a mix of cold mornings and endless new textures. Shira Camp was where I really noticed how thin the air felt; even zipping up my jacket took effort. At Lava Tower, someone from another group tried to teach me a song about Kibo peak — I mangled every line but they laughed anyway. The landscape kept changing: one minute spongy moss underfoot, then loose scree that slid away if you weren’t careful. Our crew moved like it was nothing; I kept watching them fly up Barranco Wall while I clung to rocks and tried not to look down too much.
Summit night is still a blur for me. We started in pitch dark — just headlamps bobbing in the cold, everyone half-awake and quiet except for Daniel whispering encouragements. My water bottle froze solid by Stella Point. When the sun cracked over Uhuru Peak, it didn’t feel real at first — orange light on snow, everyone hugging each other even if we barely knew each other’s names yesterday. Coming down was almost harder than going up; my legs shook all the way to Mweka Camp but there was this weird joy too (plus someone handed me a mango juice at the gate and it tasted like victory).
There’s this moment back at Moshi when you finally shower off six days of dust and realize you actually did it — climbed Kilimanjaro by the Machame route. Still not sure how I managed those last steps to the top but sometimes I catch myself daydreaming about that sunrise above Africa. You know?
