The experience

The trek begins with a drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate (2,100m), where you register with Kilimanjaro National Park and complete a safety briefing before walking into dense rainforest. That first day is short (3 to 4 hours through colobus monkey habitat and bird-filled canopy), and lands you at Big Tree Camp. The next two days take you from rainforest into moorland and across the Shira Plateau, with the landscape opening into views of Kibo Peak as you climb toward 3,900m. This gradual rise is the route's defining strength: it gives your body time to adjust to altitude before the serious climbing begins.

Days four through six are the acclimatization push. You ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m, then deliberately descend to Barranco Camp: the "climb high, sleep low" technique that reduces altitude sickness. The next day brings the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical rock scramble with panoramic views at the top, followed by a short trek to Karanga Camp. From there you climb to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the final staging point, where you eat early and rest before the summit attempt begins at midnight.

The summit day starts in darkness and reaches Uhuru Peak at sunrise: the moment you stand on the Roof of Africa at 5,895m. After celebrating at the summit, you descend the same day to Mweka Camp (3,100m), a long but necessary push. The final morning is a trek through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,630m), where you receive your summit certificate before the drive back to Moshi. Your guide, cook and porters are with you throughout, handling meals, camp setup and logistics so you can focus on the climb.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 14 years); Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What makes the Lemosho Route different from other paths up Kilimanjaro?

The Lemosho Route is the most scenic approach, starting in rainforest on the western side and crossing the Shira Plateau before joining the main route near Barafu Camp. Its gradual ascent profile gives better acclimatization than faster routes, which is why it has the highest summit success rate on the mountain.

How many hours of actual trekking happens each day?

Day one is 3–4 hours through rainforest; day two is 5–6 hours as you climb into moorland; day three is a shorter, relaxing day on the Shira Plateau; day four is a challenging acclimatization day with ascent to Lava Tower and descent to Barranco; day five includes the Barranco Wall scramble and a short trek to Karanga; day six is a steady climb to Barafu Camp; day seven is the summit push starting at midnight and descending all day; day eight is a final rainforest trek to the gate.

What is the "climb high, sleep low" technique and why does it matter?

On day four, you ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m, the highest point of the day, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960m to sleep. This forces your body to acclimatize to altitude while resting at a lower elevation, reducing the risk of altitude sickness before the final push to the summit.

What do the guide, cook and porters actually do during the trek?

The professional guide leads the route, manages safety and pacing, and provides expertise on the mountain; the cook prepares meals at each camp; the porters carry group equipment, tents and supplies so you trek with only a day pack. They handle all camp setup and logistics, allowing you to conserve energy for climbing.

When does the summit attempt happen and what is that day like?

The summit push starts at midnight on day seven from Barafu Camp (4,640m). You climb in darkness, reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise: the moment you stand on the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend the same day to Mweka Camp (3,100m), a long but necessary trek to lower altitude.
