I’ll be honest, the first morning at Machame Gate I was mostly nervous—partly because of the mountain looming behind the clouds, but also because our guide Joseph just smiled and said, “Pole pole.” Slow and steady. The forest was thick and wet, everything smelled green and earthy. I kept hearing birds I couldn’t see, and once a flash of black-and-white—colobus monkeys. Our porters moved way faster than us, singing sometimes in Swahili. By dinner at Machame Camp, my legs were jelly but I felt oddly calm sitting around the mess tent with soup steaming up my glasses.

The second day on this Kilimanjaro trek was all about rocks—steep switchbacks and dusty boots. Joseph pointed out Shira Plateau ahead (“That’s home tonight!”) and I remember thinking it looked impossibly far. It wasn’t easy (I mean, it’s not supposed to be), but there was this moment when we stopped for tea and clouds rolled past so close you could almost taste them. Later that night at Shira Camp, someone started humming quietly while the sky went purple. Not sure why that sticks with me.

By Barranco Wall I’d lost track of what day it was. That wall is no joke—hands scrambling on cold rock before sunrise—but reaching the top felt like a weird little victory. Karanga Camp came after another long push; my hands were cracked from the dry air but dinner tasted better than any restaurant meal back home. The guides joked about our slow pace (“Karanga Express!”), which made us laugh even though we were exhausted.

Summit night is still a blur—headlamps bobbing in the dark, boots crunching ice, everyone quiet except for Joseph whispering encouragement now and then. Watching sunrise from Uhuru Peak didn’t feel real until much later; my brain was too foggy from altitude to process it right away. The descent felt endless but lighter somehow—I think I was just happy to breathe thick air again by Mweka Camp. Even now, when I smell damp earth after rain, it takes me back there.
