Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 7-Day Trek: Climb through five climate zones
Can you cross five climate zones and summit Africa's highest peak in a week?
You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to a hotel in the foothills for a pre-climb briefing. Over seven days, you trek the quieter Lemosho route across five climate zones, with acclimatization hikes built into the schedule and a personal guide assigned for the summit push. All meals, camping equipment, oxygen, and medical support are included. You descend to the rainforest, collect your certificate at Mweka Gate, and return to the hotel for a final night before your airport transfer home.

The Experience
The porter who loaded my pack at the hotel gate in Moshi asked where I was from, then nodded like he'd heard it a hundred times before. Three hours later, standing at Londorossi Gate after the drive up from the foothills, I understood why—this route sees fewer climbers than the crowded southern approaches, which means the mountain feels less like a queue and more like something you're actually earning. The Lemosho route starts you at 2,200 meters and climbs west across the Shira Plateau, crossing five climate zones on the way to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The first two days are gentle enough that your body has time to adjust before the altitude gets serious.
Each camp is set up before you arrive—tents pitched, sleeping bags laid out, the kitchen crew already working on dinner. You walk 5 kilometers on day two, then 7 kilometers on day three, nothing that feels impossible if you've trained a bit. What matters more is the acclimatization hikes built into days three, four, and five: you climb 200 meters higher than your camp, spend an hour or two up there, then come back down to sleep. It sounds redundant until you're at Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, eating lunch while your body learns to work on less oxygen, and you realize this is the difference between summiting and turning back. The guides—all certified Wilderness First Responders—watch for signs of altitude sickness and adjust the pace if someone's struggling. They carry unlimited oxygen and oximeters, so if things get tight, they can help.
Day five is the famous Barranco Wall, which looks terrifying from camp but takes about an hour to climb—it's steep but the trail is straightforward, and by then you've done enough vertical that your legs know what they're doing. After that comes Karanga Camp, then Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters, where you rest and eat a big dinner because you're leaving at midnight. The summit push starts in darkness: eight to twelve hours of walking slowly uphill in the cold, each climber paired with a personal guide. When the sun comes up, you're above the clouds. Uhuru Peak is a small sign on a rocky plateau, and the air is so thin that standing there feels like being inside a dream you're not sure you'll remember. Then you descend the same day—fifteen kilometers down to Millennium Camp in the rainforest, where the air is thick again and your legs remember what gravity feels like.
The last day is a walk out through forest to Mweka Gate, where the park rangers gather to congratulate you and you get your certificate. The whole group is quiet on the drive back to the hotel in Moshi, the kind of tired where you don't need to talk. Two nights at Aishi Machame Hotel bookend the climb—one before to brief and prepare, one after to sleep and recover before your flight. Airport transfers are included both ways, so you don't have to arrange transport or negotiate with a taxi driver when you land.
What’s included
Your seven days include two nights at Aishi Machame Hotel (one before the climb, one after), all ground transportation from Kilimanjaro International Airport, high-quality group equipment (dining tent, sleeping pads, chairs, crockery), North Face VE-25 tents on the mountain, certified guides trained in wilderness first response, a professional crew of porters and camp masters, all meals with dietary options, unlimited oxygen tanks and oximeters, medical kits and check-ups, and park fees collected by Kilimanjaro National Park.
Operated by Altezza Travel
Is this one for you?Right for trekkers with moderate fitness who want to reach 5,895 meters with proper acclimatization and don't want to arrange logistics—the seven-day timeline and built-in rest days are what make the altitude manageable. Plan for sustained physical effort: you're walking four to eight hours most days, and the summit push is eight to twelve hours in darkness and thin air.

What's the difference between Lemosho and other Kilimanjaro routes?
Lemosho approaches from the west and has fewer climbers than the Marangu or Machame routes. It crosses the Shira Plateau and allows more time for acclimatization before the final push to the summit.
Do I need climbing experience to do this trek?
No. The route is designed for beginners and experienced hikers alike. You need moderate fitness and the ability to walk for several hours a day, but technical climbing skills are not required.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?
Guides monitor you daily and carry oxygen and oximeters. If symptoms develop, the route can be adjusted—some groups skip Lava Tower and take the porter trail instead, reaching a maximum of 4,400 meters rather than 4,630 meters.
Are meals included on the mountain?
Yes. Three meals a day are provided, with options for vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, halal, and other dietary needs. Drinks (tea, coffee, juice, soda) are also included.
How many people are in each tent?
Two hikers per North Face VE-25 tent, except for solo climbers who have a tent to themselves.
What is the summit night like?
You depart Barafu Camp at midnight and climb for eight to twelve hours in darkness and cold. Each climber gets a personal guide. You reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters as the sun rises, then descend the same day to Millennium Camp.
Is this tour recommended for pregnant travelers?
No. The operator does not recommend this trek for pregnant travelers, those with spinal injuries, or those with poor cardiovascular health.
