Five Days to Africa's Highest Point on the Route Built for Sleep

You hike the easiest Kilimanjaro route with beds and running water at every camp, not tents. The 5-day itinerary starts in Moshi, passes through rainforest and moorland, and reaches Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet before descending to the same huts you slept in on the way up. Guides, porters, cook, all meals, park fees, and airport transfers are included, along with two nights' hotel stay before and after the climb.

The Experience

"You will make it," your guide will tell you at the gate, and he means it — not because the mountain is easy, but because the Marangu Route is built so you can actually rest between climbs. Leave Moshi at 9 AM, drive 45 minutes to the Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro's eastern side, register with the national park, and start hiking at 10:30 AM through rainforest thick with Eucalyptus trees and Colobus monkeys. The path is wet and muddy at this elevation; gaiters and trekking poles matter here. By 2 or 3 PM you're at Mandara Huts, where you'll sleep on a real sponge mattress in a communal bunk, use running water, and eat dinner at 7 PM in a dining hut full of climbers from five or six countries. This is not camping. This is the only route on Kilimanjaro with beds at every camp.

Day two takes you through rainforest glades and into heathland where giant lobelias grow taller than you'd expect. Breakfast is 7:30 AM; you break camp by 8:30. The path climbs steadily, and by midday you're eating lunch with views of Mawenzi, the mountain's second peak, spreading across the horizon. Horombo Huts arrive by 3 PM, and here the altitude starts to press — some people feel it, some don't. The route gives you the option to spend an extra day resting at Horombo or climbing to a basecamp below Mawenzi's sub-peak if you want better acclimatization. Either way, you're sleeping in a hut with a mattress and running water, not a tent on scree.

On day three the landscape shifts into something lunar — heathland fades into a vast saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo, and the air thins noticeably. Breakfast, hike through the dwindling vegetation, stop for lunch, and by afternoon you're at Kibo Huts, where there's no running water but there is shelter and a meal. That night you'll sleep light, because at 1 AM you wake to a light breakfast and start the summit push. The climb is steep switchbacks up scree or possibly snow, and the goal is to reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim — 18,640 feet — between 5 and 7 AM, just as the sun rises. From there, two more hours along the crater rim near the icecaps take you to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point, by 9 AM. You stand there. You take the photo. Then you descend back to Kibo Huts for lunch and rest, and that same day you cross the saddle again to Horombo Huts for dinner and sleep.

Day five is the victory lap. Wake, pack, descend through moorland back to Mandara Huts for lunch, then down through lush forest to the park gate by 2 or 3 PM. A vehicle takes you back to Springlands Hotel in Moshi, where you shower, eat something that isn't mountain food, and sleep in a real bed for two nights before heading to the airport or onward to Zanzibar. The climb itself is five days, but the package includes two nights at the hotel before you start and two nights after you finish, so you're not collapsing into an airport transfer the moment you step off the mountain.

Top questions

What makes the Marangu Route different from other Kilimanjaro routes?

It's the only route with solar-powered sleeping huts and beds at every camp instead of tents. It's also the shortest and easiest route to the summit, usually completed in 5 days.

Is there running water on the mountain?

Yes, at Mandara and Horombo Huts. There is no running water at Kibo Huts, the highest camp.

What time do you start climbing to the summit?

You wake at midnight and leave at 1 AM to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise, around 9 AM.

Are meals included?

Yes. All breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the mountain are included, plus meals at the hotel before and after the climb.

How many people climb together?

Climbing groups are often made up of people from several countries and share meals in communal dining huts, but the exact group size depends on the departure.

What's included in the price?

Guides, porters, cook, all meals on the mountain, hut fees, park entry, rescue fees, airport transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport, two nights at Springlands Hotel in Moshi before and after, and a first aid kit with pulse oximeters.

Can I do the climb in 6 days instead of 5?

Yes. You can spend an extra day resting at Horombo Huts or climbing to a basecamp below Mawenzi for better acclimatization.

What should I bring to buy drinks at the huts?

Bring small Tanzanian bills. Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer are available for purchase at the huts, and prices increase with elevation.

Do I need to be very fit?

You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The climb is not technical, but it is long and the altitude affects everyone differently.

What happens after I reach the summit?

You descend the same day back to Kibo Huts for lunch and rest, then continue to Horombo Huts for dinner. The next day you descend through moorland and forest to the park gate, then return to Moshi by vehicle.
