The Marangu route uses the same path up and down, which means you climb the oldest, most established route on the mountain.

A 6-day Marangu route climb of Mount Kilimanjaro from Moshi starts at the southeast base and ascends to Uhuru Peak, sleeping in hut dormitories each night with a guide, cook and porters. The route is the gentlest on the mountain because of its gradual slope, and it's the only one offering hut accommodation instead of camping. Meals, water, park fees and crew wages are included. You bring your own sleeping bag.

Step-by-step itinerary

Climb Marangu Route to Kilimanjaro Peak

  • Begin climb with guide and team
  • Observe nature and wildlife
  • Rest overnight at selected point
  • Experience sunrise on mountain
  • Reach Uhuru Peak summit
  • Celebrate at roof of Africa

The experience

The Marangu route earns the nickname "Coca-Cola route" because the gradual slope and direct path make it the easiest way up Kilimanjaro. It's also the oldest and most well-established route, which means the hut system is reliable: you sleep in dormitory-style accommodation with mattresses and pillows provided, and communal dining halls where all meals are served. The trade-off is that ascent and descent follow the same path, so the scenery repeats and the route draws the most climbers. The short timeframe, six days to summit, makes altitude acclimatization tighter than on longer routes, but the huts let you rest properly each night instead of managing a tent.

Your climbing team includes a guide, a cook and porters who carry the heavy gear. You'll observe the natural landscape, vegetation, animals and birds as you move through different elevation zones, and you'll sleep at selected points on the mountain to experience the night there. The sunrise moments and the final push to Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet (where snow and the view of the African continent spread below) are the moments climbers return for. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language, so the commentary and safety briefings reach you clearly.

Gate transfers from Moshi are included, as are all meals from start to finish. Drinking water is supplied throughout. You'll need to bring your own sleeping bag, and you're responsible for crew tips and any visa requirements. Children from age 7 can join. The climb is suitable for all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language, so if you need the commentary and safety briefings in one of those languages, you'll follow everything clearly. The 6-day schedule is compressed for altitude acclimatization, so if you have more time, a longer route spreads the climb across more days. If six days is all you have, Marangu's hut system and gradual slope make it the most manageable choice.

What's the difference between the Marangu route and the other ways up Kilimanjaro?

Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation instead of camping, and it has the gentlest slope because the path ascends and descends the same way. It's also the oldest and most crowded route for that reason, though the established hut system means reliable meals and shelter each night.

How much altitude acclimatization time do I get on a 6-day climb?

The 6-day timeframe is tight for acclimatization compared to longer routes, but sleeping in huts each night, rather than managing a tent, gives your body proper rest at altitude. The gradual slope of Marangu helps offset the compressed schedule.

What do the mountain huts actually have?

The huts are dormitory-style with mattresses and pillows already there. You bring your sleeping bag. Each hut has a communal dining hall where meals are cooked and served, and basic washrooms and toilets are available.

Who carries my gear, and what meals are provided?

A guide, cook and porters travel with your group. The porters carry the heavy equipment so you climb with a day pack. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by the cook and served in the hut dining halls throughout the climb.

Do I need experience climbing mountains to do this route?

The climb is suitable for all fitness levels. No prior climbing experience is required, though the altitude and the six-day commitment demand reasonable fitness and the ability to walk for several hours each day.
