The experience
Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route with shared hut accommodations, which means you sleep in wooden A-framed huts with bunk beds and solar lighting instead of pitching a tent each night. Water is piped into the camps from springs, and flush toilets are behind the main hut. Each camp has a capacity of around 60 climbers, so you're never alone on the mountain. The huts also stock mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beer for purchase if you need extras.
The route takes you through three distinct habitats over five days. Day one is a 5-hour hike through montane forest to Mandara hut at 2,700 m. Day two climbs 6 hours through moorland to Horombo hut at 3,720 m, passing the rim of Maundi Crater where you can see Kibo's glaciers on clear days. Day three ascends 6 hours into alpine desert, reaching Kibo hut at 4,700 m. The fourth day is the summit push: you leave Kibo just before midnight, climb 10 hours to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, then descend 6 hours back to Horombo hut the same day. Day five is a 6-hour descent through moorland and forest back to Marangu gate, where you receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi.
Your guide speaks English and leads the entire climb. Porters carry your equipment, food and water so you only need a daypack. A cook prepares three meals daily at each camp. An oxygen tank travels with the group in case of emergency. You get one night in a hotel in Moshi before the trek starts and one night after you descend, so you have time to rest and recover.
