Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: 5-day climb to Uhuru Peak
You climb at night to reach the summit before dawn.
Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu route over 5 days, departing from Moshi with hotel pickup and returning to the gate. You walk through rainforest and alpine moorland across four days of acclimatization, then wake at 11pm on day four for the midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak, descending back through Horombo Hut before the final walk out. Professional English-speaking guide, porters, all meals, hut accommodation, oximeter checks and emergency oxygen are included; children from age 14 are welcome.
The Experience
The Marangu route is the only path on Kilimanjaro where you sleep in huts instead of tents, and the climb begins the moment you leave your hotel in Moshi. A professional guide picks you up and drives you to Marangu Gate at 1,600 metres, where the trail enters the rainforest. Day one is a gentle 4-hour walk through dense green to Mandara Hut at 2,700 metres—the altitude gain is real but the pace is slow enough that your body starts adjusting before the steeper sections begin.
Day two takes around 7 hours as the forest opens into alpine moorland and the trail climbs to Horombo Hut at 3,700 metres. Day three is the acclimatization day: you climb from Horombo toward Kibo Hut, gaining another 600 metres uphill to the foot of Mawenzi before descending to the saddle. The route is designed so your body has time to adapt to thinner air before the final push. A professional chef cooks all three meals at each hut, and porters carry the heavy gear so you walk with only a daypack. An oximeter checks your oxygen levels daily, and a first aid kit plus emergency oxygen cylinder travel with the group.
Day four is the summit day. You're woken around 11pm, dress in all your warm layers, drink something hot, and set off at midnight for the climb to Uhuru Peak. The darkness and the cold are real, but reaching the summit as the sun rises is why people come. After time at the peak, you descend back to Horombo Hut the same day. Day five is the walk out: 3 hours down to Mandara Hut, then another 2 hours through the forest back to Marangu Gate and your hotel in Moshi.

Is this one for you? This climb suits small groups or individuals who want the support of huts and a chef rather than the self-sufficiency of camping routes—you walk the same mountain but sleep indoors and eat hot meals, which changes how your body recovers each night. Children from age 14 can join if they have moderate fitness; the slow pace and hut-based structure make it more accessible than other Kilimanjaro routes, though it remains a serious physical undertaking over five days.

What's the Marangu route like compared to other paths up Kilimanjaro?
The Marangu route is the only one with hut accommodation instead of camping, and it's considered the most gradual approach to the summit. You sleep indoors, eat hot meals prepared by a chef, and have porters carrying your gear—the trade-off is that it's also the most crowded path on the mountain.
How much climbing experience do I need for this 5-day climb?
No mountaineering experience is required. The Marangu route is designed for people with moderate physical fitness who can walk for several hours a day at a steady pace. The guide sets a slow rhythm to help your body adjust to altitude, and the hut stops give you time to recover each night.
What happens if I get altitude sickness during the climb?
The guide monitors everyone daily with an oximeter and watches for symptoms. The route itself is built for acclimatization—you spend three days gradually gaining altitude before the summit push, which gives your body the best chance to adapt. Emergency oxygen is carried with the group, and the guide can arrange descent if needed.
Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag and climbing boots?
Yes, personal trekking gear including boots and a sleeping bag are not included and you'll need to bring or rent them separately. The huts provide beds, so you don't need a tent, but you do need your own warm layers and footwear.
Is the Kilimanjaro National Park fee included in the price?
The park fee and tax are optional and depend on which option you choose at checkout—some packages include them and others don't, so confirm before you book.
What time of year is best for this climb?
The dry seasons—January to February and August to September—offer the most stable weather. The rainy seasons bring clouds and mud, which make the forest section harder to walk and the views from the summit less likely.
