The experience

You start from your hotel in Moshi and drive to Lemosho Park Gate, where a 4WD vehicle takes you to Lemosho Glades. An armed ranger joins the group for the first day hike through montane forest to Mti Mkubwa Camp: a precaution because buffalo, elephant and other wildlife inhabit the forests around the glades. The opening stretch is short, just 2–3 hours of hiking, and gets you oriented to the rhythm of the climb.

Days 2 through 6 build elevation steadily but without rushing. You cross the Shira Ridge into moorland, spend an acclimatization day on the Shira Plateau where optional hikes let you gain altitude and descend to sleep, then traverse the South Circuit around the mountain's southern face. This path passes the Lava Tower (the "Shark's Tooth" at 4,650 meters) and gives your body repeated exposure to thinner air before you reach Barafu Camp at 4,700 meters. The longest single day is 5–6 hours of walking. Most are 3–5 hours. Guides, porters and a cook travel with you, handling camp setup and preparing three meals daily.

Day 7 is summit day. You leave Barafu between midnight and 2 a.m., climbing through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers toward Stella Point on the crater rim: the most demanding stretch physically and mentally. Sunrise often comes at Stella Point. Faster climbers may reach Uhuru Peak, the continent's highest point, in daylight. The descent to Mweka Camp takes the rest of the day. On Day 8, a 3–4 hour walk down through forest leads to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. A vehicle waits to drive you back to Moshi, about an hour away.

The 8-day structure is built around acclimatization. The extra days compared to faster routes mean your body has more time to adapt to altitude, which directly reduces the risk of altitude sickness and gives you better odds of reaching the summit. Guides speak English, Spanish, French or German. Children from age 5 are welcome. All camping equipment, meals on the mountain, national park fees and rescue fees are included. You bring personal gear and climbing clothes.

Top questions

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and German.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (17 to 29 years); Child (5 to 16 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Lemosho Route and why is it considered one of the best for this climb?

The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, crossing the Shira Plateau and circling the mountain's southern face before the final ascent. It is less crowded than other routes and offers strong acclimatization because the climb is gradual, with multiple days spent at high altitude before the summit push. The 8-day version of this route has one of the highest success rates for reaching Uhuru Peak.

What happens on summit day and what time do we start?

Summit day begins between midnight and 2 a.m. from Barafu Camp. You climb through scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim, the most physically and mentally demanding portion of the trek. Many climbers see the sunrise at Stella Point. Faster hikers may reach Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point, in daylight. After the summit, you descend to Mweka Camp the same day.

How much time do we spend hiking each day?

Most days involve 3–5 hours of hiking. Day 1 is the shortest at 2–3 hours. Day 4, crossing from the Shira Plateau to Barranco Camp, takes 5–6 hours and is one of the longest, though it is crucial for acclimatization. Day 8, the final descent to Mweka Gate, is 3–4 hours.

Is an armed ranger with the group a safety measure?

An armed ranger accompanies groups on Day 1 through the forests around Lemosho Glades because buffalo, elephant and other wildlife inhabit the area. This is a standard precaution on the Lemosho Route and allows safe passage through the montane forest zone.

What do I need to bring, and what is provided?

The operator provides tents, sleeping mattresses, camping chairs, tables, mess tent for dining, cutlery and candles. You bring personal climbing gear (boots, layers, rain jacket, hat, gloves), sleeping bag, personal toiletries and any medications. Guides, porters and a waiter handle camp setup and meals. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for the scree descent on Day 7 but not required.
