The experience
You start from Machame Gate and climb 11 kilometers through rainforest on day one, reaching Machame Camp at 9,350 feet in 5 to 7 hours. The next two days move you through heath and into alpine desert, with day three's route ascending to Lava Tower at 15,190 feet and then dropping to Barranco Camp. A deliberate descent that lets your body acclimatize while you sleep lower. Days four and five keep you in the alpine desert, moving between camps at similar elevations, so the acclimatization continues without the shock of rapid altitude gain.
Day six is the summit push: you leave Barafu Camp at 15,331 feet and climb 5 kilometers to Uhuru Peak in 7 to 8 hours, then descend 12 kilometers the same day to Mweka Camp in the rainforest. The final day is a 10-kilometer walk down to Mweka Gate, where a driver picks you up and takes you back to your hotel in Moshi. A professional English-speaking guide leads the group, with porters and camp staff handling the logistics. You get breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, plus a trekking certificate at the finish. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and other meal plans are available if you request them when you book.
The Machame Route is steeper and more scenic than other paths on the mountain, and it suits hikers with moderate fitness who want high summit success rates. The group size keeps costs down, and the operator handles pickup from your Moshi hotel and drop-off after the trek, so you don't arrange transport separately. Camping equipment (tent and mattress) is provided.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and French.
What is the elevation gain each day on the Machame Route?
Day one climbs from 5,380 to 9,350 feet; day two reaches 12,500 feet; day three ascends to 15,190 feet before dropping to 13,044 feet at Barranco Camp. Days four and five stay in the 13,000 to 15,300-foot range, then day six goes from 15,331 feet to the 19,341-foot summit and back down to 10,065 feet at Mweka Camp. The final day descends to 5,380 feet at the gate.
How does the "hike high, sleep low" strategy work on this route?
The Machame Route climbs during the day to higher elevations, then descends to sleep at lower camps, which helps your body adjust to altitude gradually. Day three is the clearest example: you climb to Lava Tower at 15,190 feet, then drop back down to Barranco Camp at 13,044 feet to sleep. This pattern repeats across the week and improves your chances of reaching the summit without altitude sickness.
What meals and dietary options are included during the trek?
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided every day of the trek. The operator offers vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and other meal plans if you request them when booking, so you can arrange your dietary needs in advance.
What is included in the camping equipment provided?
Tents and mattresses are provided for each night on the mountain. You bring your own sleeping bag and personal hiking gear. The operator does not supply those.
How long does the summit day take, and what happens after reaching Uhuru Peak?
The climb from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak takes 7 to 8 hours, covering 5 kilometers. After reaching the summit, you descend 12 kilometers the same day to Mweka Camp in the rainforest, a 4 to 6-hour descent, so the entire summit day is roughly 12 to 14 hours of hiking.
What happens on the final day after leaving Mweka Camp?
Day seven is a 10-kilometer walk down through rainforest from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, taking 3 to 4 hours. Once you reach the gate, a driver picks you up and takes you back to your hotel in Moshi. You receive a trekking certificate at the end of the trek.
